Another season, another preview. This one looks better than Summer so far as there are at least 6 shows that I can say are top tier at this time. I might come back and add more to this post later, but for now here’s my initial reactions.

Top Shows

  • BTOOOM! – From the studio that brought us Highschool of the Dead. I’ve read some of this and it feels the same in a sense, will most likely be one of the 3 biggest shows of the season no doubt.
  • K – A mysterious anime original series that no one seems to know anything about. Followed by an all star cast and famous people all around, this is undoubtedly in the top 3 of the season.
  • Girls und Panzer – High school girls mixed with Panzer tanks, what more can I say? There’s high values all around for this show and from what I’ve seen so far it looks to have a feel similar to Strike Witches.
  • PSYCHO-PASS – From the mind of Urobochi Gen, the guy who brought us Madoka AND Fate/Zero, comes a new series focusing on… Guns and Justice? Well, Urobochi hasn’t let me down yet.
  • ROBOTICS;NOTES – Calling it now, top show of the season. From the creators of Chaos;Head and Steins;Gate comes the next in the “franchise,” this time on NoitaminA!
  • Aoi Sekai no Chuushin de – Fantasy anime  parody of the Sega vs. Nintendo console wars? Interesting and fun, let’s hope they can keep us guessing on the outcome.
  • Little Busters! – From the creators of the magnificent series Clannad, Angel Beats, and Kanon, need I say more?

Medium / Maybe Blogging

  • Shin Sekai Yori – Co-winner of a 2008 award for best sci-fi work in all mediums, what more is there to say? Yes Please.
  • Kamisama Hajimemashita – An adaptation of an fairly popularly shoujo manga. I liked the source the material enough and it’s being done by the director of Fruits Baskets so should be an enjoyable show similar to how Fruits Basket/Kaichou wa Maid-sama was for their time. (i.e. not winning any awards but quite watchable).
  • Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun – Another shoujo manga adaptation, I actually haven’t delved too much into this, but from what I know the romance is a bigger aspect here than in Kamisama. I’m just hoping it doesn’t follow normal tropes all the way, though that can be good -if done right- as well.
  • Jormungand 2: Perfect Order – A sequel to one of the best shows of the Spring 2012 season? Yes Please. Action packed, great cast of characters, and an interesting story following a -kinda crazy- arms dealer.
  • Hayate the Combat Butler! Can’t Take My Eyes Off You – A reboot of the series (from what I can tell), this time around adding anime original stuff written directly by the author.
  • Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai! – Kyoto Animation’s (Clannad, Kanon, FMP, K-On) foray into romance this season with an adaptation of a light novel. There’s a bit of special powers involved. Normally I wouldn’t be too interested, but Kyo-Ani’s shows are generally very good.
  • Busou Shinki – From the direct of Infinite Stratos, didn’t watch the mini-series adaptation, but the premise feels the same as IS.
  • Zetsuen no Tempest – Fantasy series for the season, seems fairly generic with tons of potential.
  • Onii-chan Dakedo Ai Sae Areba Kankei Nai yo ne  – Typical harem / romcom with a twist! The male lead has reason (besides being a wuss) to reject the horny female lead!
  • Sukitte Ii na yo – Shoujo manga adaptation, really liked the original the whole popular male takes interest in unpopular female is done to death, but there’s more serious issues that are dealt with in the series as well.
  • Magi – Anime adaptation of the One Thousand and One Nights story? Count me in, love these book to anime adaptations!
  • Aikatsu! – Tons of unknowns with this show. A relatively unknown cast, but the inclusion of the guy who worked on idolm@ster and Amagami SS raises some eyebrows, it could be an amazing show.
  • Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo – This show seems like a typical romcom, but for some reason its gotten tons of popularity in Japan.
  •  Seitokai no Ichizon – Hekiyoh Gakuen Seitokai Gijiroku – Sequel to the surprise harem comedy many seasons ago. This is one of those shows that really deserved a sequel and I’m glad it’s getting it.
  • CODE:BREAKER – Action-oriented shounen show with a strong heroine, seems like my cup of tea. I fear pacing issues with the long (19 volume) source material though.

Lower / Not Blogging (most likely)

  • Hidamari Sketch x Honeycomb – Fourth season, I liked the first but haven’t seen the other two. One day I’ll check it out, but I can vouch for the initial series being good anyways.
  • Gintama (2012) – Continuation of the hit series, one of the best continuous comedies ever. Nuff said.
  • JoJo’s Bizzare Adventure the Animation – After 25 years, JoJo finally gets a proper anime adaptation. I don’t think most of the mature stuff from the source will be adapted, it will be interesting to see how it fares to today’s anime crowd.
  • Litchi de Hikari Club – Interesting premise but 2-5 minute episodes may not do it justice.
  • To Love-Ru – Trouble: Darkness – The ecchi sequel to the first series, pretty borderline hentai if they follow the manga. Guilty pleasure fanservice show of the season?
  • Ixion Saga DT – Fantasy anime adaptation of an online game. I feel it’s made for promotional purposes, but that could also be a strong point if done right.
  • Medaka Box Abnormal – Gainax + Writer of Bakemonogatari = win. I liked the original, but I’m told this will put it more into a “battle” anime.
  • Bakuman 3 – 3rd Season of the hit show adapted from the manga. I think this will finish off the series (which is by the creator of Death Note). I followed the manga for awhile, but never watched the show. From what I hear though, it’s quite good.

Nope

  • Battle Spirits: Sword Eyes – I don’t typically enjoy card game based adaptations. Yugioh and Cardfight are all for me, thanks.
  • Chou Soku Henkei Gyrozetter – Transforming card game? Not really a fan.
  • Wooser no Sono Higurashi – 3D shorts centering on mascot characters living on the internet? Sounds interesting, but not Fall anime season quality.
  • Monsuno – Japanese-American co-production just screams mediocre.
  • Initial D Fifth Stage – Haven’t watched any of the previous series in ages.
